He was responding to things more imaginatively, whereas the Mulleavy sisters were working on the surface. All their textured fabrics and leathers really amount to ornament. Rodriguez black cashmere coat with the shiny, grainy inset of jacquard silk might well allude to technology, and our obsession with digital devices. I dont know. But his collection made me see things, and make connections. For a minimalist, he covers a lot of ground. And I loved the unexpected, full-on display of camouflage.

As I noted in an article in Thursday Styles this week, a new generation of designers is rising in New York, the first in decades to have the power to change what we think of as American fashion. Just what that change will be remains to be seen.
